What to ask when you tour a skilled nursing facility

Touring a skilled nursing facility (SNF) can feel overwhelming, especially on short notice. Walking in with a few clear questions helps you compare places fairly instead of going on a gut feeling. Here’s a starting checklist.

Staffing

• What is the typical nurse- and aide-to-resident ratio, and does it change at night or on weekends?
• Is there a registered nurse on-site 24 hours a day?
• Do the same staff tend to work with the same residents?

Care and therapy

• What therapies are offered (physical, occupational, speech), and how many days a week?
• How are families kept updated on a loved one’s progress and care plan?
• How does the facility handle a change in condition or an emergency?

The everyday experience

• Are residents clean, comfortable, and engaged? Does the building feel and smell well-kept?
• What activities are available, and can residents have visitors freely?
• How is food handled for special diets?

The practical side

• Is the facility Medicare- and Medi-Cal-certified?
• What costs aren’t covered by insurance, and what happens if coverage ends?
• May I see the most recent state inspection report?
